Ledisi New CD: "TURN ME LOOSE " released 08/18/2009

The L.A. Times music blog: No musician forgets his or her first Grammy nomination. But Ledisi, an earthy R&B singer from Oakland, probably remembers hers for a unique reason: Announcing the nominees for last year's best new artist prize, Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters admitted he didn't know how to pronounce Ledisi's name, presumably because he'd never come across it. (Needless to say, Grohl had no trouble with Taylor Swift and Amy Winehouse.) For the record, the name rhymes with "legacy" -- appropriate for an artist whose breakthrough album, 2007's "Lost & Found," reflected a proudly conservative neo-soul sensibility. Ledisi's new set, "Turn Me Loose," feels like the work of someone determined to make a deeper impact; it's glossier and more youth-oriented than "Lost & Found," with beatwise production by rap-friendly veterans such as Raphael Saadiq, Chucky Thompson and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. In the album's opener, "Runnin,' " Ledisi yowls like a punk-rock Tina Turner over a hard-knocking groove by Chief Xcel, half of the Bay Area hip-hop duo Blackalicious. The singer sounds perfectly comfortable with her sonic makeover on "Turn Me Loose," particularly in the pair of cuts produced by the crafty Saadiq. "I can't keep living in the past," she sings in "Love Never Changes," one of three tracks here with the word "changes" in its title. Yet for all the sleek settings and the vocal firepower Ledisi deploys, "Turn Me Loose" doesn't really present an artistic persona any more memorable than the earnest traditionalist from "Lost & Found." Ledisi extols the power of transformation but fails to demonstrate who precisely she's become.

Mediocre People Do Exceptional Things All The Time

Mediocre People Do Exceptional Things All the Time by Matt on 06/15/2009 We are victims of circumstance. We are products of our surroundings. We evolve based on our environment. Any of these phrases ring a bell? Growing up – many of us are told that our dreams are too big – that we’re aiming too high, that we just can’t do it and our expectations should be lowered. Doubt is a common emotion within all of us – we doubt our own potential for greatness and our ability to do good and rise above. We’re in a constant battle with self-worry, doubt, and confusion – the thoughts that seek to hold us back and limit our potential. What worries us and brings upon doubt within us? It’s the idea that we must be unique in order to be successful. Your potential for greatness is limitless once you realize that it’s not about being unique, it’s about being the best.

Discussion Question: How Deep Is Your Love?

In a world where love is one of the ultimate heights of gratification. Have you ever had your love truly tested? Imagine this...You have a wonderful, amazing, handsome/beautiful wife or husband. The two of you have been married for a little under three years, married life is great..You love it! Suddenly your husband/wife wakes up from a stroke and are left permanently blind. At this stage of your marriage you have postponed having children to focus on each other...At present your world completely shifts because the independence of your spouse is gravely impaired..How do you handle it? Is the sudden shift in roles & responsibilities too much to handle..do you leave? Do you stay and pray through it..and live up to the vow you made in eyesight of God "for better or for worse"?

The Health Tip: How to be a Healthy Diabetic

How To Be A Healthy Diabetic 28-Jul-2009

(BlackDoctor.org) -- If you are living with diabetes, lifestyle is an important element of your care. It is extremely important that you eat a good balance of foods every day and exercise regularly. Managing your disease also means taking medicine, if necessary, and testing your blood sugar levels each day.

Diet:

Diabetes does not require special foods. A healthy, balanced diet can come from everyday foods. If you have diabetes, you should:

•Choose foods that are low in fat and salt. •Choose foods that are high in fiber (such as beans, vegetables and fruit). •Remember to eat foods from all food groups: milk and milk products; lean meat, chicken, turkey, fish, beans, cheese, and eggs; bread, cereal, rice, noodles, and potatoes; and fruits and vegetables. •Lose weight by reducing the amount of food you eat. If you have type 2 diabetes, weight loss will make your diabetes easier to control. Your doctor can refer you to a dietitian who can help you plan meals that include the right foods, and recipes that taste great and are good for you.

Alcohol:

If your diabetes is under control and you do not have high blood pressure or nerve damage, your doctor may allow you to drink alcohol in moderation. Keep in mind that if you drink alcohol while taking insulin or other diabetes medication, you risk low blood sugar. The liver slows its release of glucose until it first clears the alcohol.

If you drink alcohol, limit yourself to one drink a day if you are a woman and two drinks a day if you are a man. Never drink alcohol on an empty stomach.

Smoking:

Smoking greatly increases your risk of heart disease and blood vessel disease — two of the major complications of diabetes. Stopping smoking is the single best thing you can do to decrease your chances of developing heart or blood vessel disease.

Exercise and Activity:

Always see a doctor before starting an exercise program. Your doctor may have good ideas about types of exercise that would be best for you. Exercise is important for people with diabetes because it does the following:

•Helps insulin work better to lower blood sugar •Helps keep weight down, which also improves the condition •Is good for the heart, blood vessels, and lungs •Gives you more energy

Be aware that exercise affects your body's need for sugar. When you exercise, be sure to do the following:

•Have a snack with you in case you get low blood sugar •Wear a tag or carry a card that says you have diabetes •Eat a snack, such as milk or an apple, if it has been more than an hour since you have eaten •Avoid exercising if your blood sugar is over 300 mg/dL. •Do not take insulin to lower your blood sugar before exercising. This may result in severe low blood sugar. If you have heart disease or risk factors for heart disease, such as advanced age, high cholesterol, increased protein in your urine, high blood pressure, or poor diabetes control, check with your doctor about whether or not you need a stress test before beginning an exercise regimen.

If you have nerve damage to your feet, be careful to wear well-fitting shoes and socks to avoid blisters. You should discuss your exercise regimen with your physician and/or podiatrist.

Medications and Monitoring:

Taking your medicines and monitoring your blood sugar are also part of managing your diabetes.

If you need to take medicine, be sure to take it as directed. Do not change your dosage or how often you take your medication unless you have been instructed to do so by your physician. Take it as prescribed and on time every day. Be careful not to skip doses of insulin or other medications.

Test your blood for sugar as directed by your doctor. Some people only test once a day. Those who take insulin or multiple medications may need to test four or more times a day. Talk to your doctor about how often you should test your blood sugar.

To test your blood, you will need test strips and a lancet to pierce your finger or forearm for a blood drop. You will simply prick your finger or forearm, get a drop of blood, and place it on the end of the strip. After a short time, place the strip in your glucose meter and get an exact number for your blood sugar.

People with type 1 diabetes may also want to buy urine or blood test strips to detect ketones—substances your body forms when you do not have enough insulin and your blood glucose levels are high. This usually happens when you are sick. You may need to test for ketones when you have a blood sugar reading of more than 240 mg/dl before you eat.

If you have a positive ketone test when you take a blood or urine test, call your doctor immediately. This may indicate a developing condition called diabetic ketoacidosis, a serious condition that can cause death if left untreated.

Finally, you should see your doctor for a hemoglobin A1c test every three to six months. This blood test gives your doctor a picture of your blood sugar levels over the past three months. Ask your doctor if you have questions about your A1c test results. You should have a normal result if most of your blood sugar levels are near 100 mg/dl.

Managing your diabetes may take some planning. Ask your doctor how to best prepare for the following situations, which may require extra insulin or even changes to your regular dose of medication:

•When you are sick •If you are planning a pregnancy or become pregnant •When you are traveling •When you are at school or at work •When you are exercising Associated Conditions

People with diabetes of both types commonly develop high blood pressure, or hypertension, and high cholesterol levels. These conditions may also require specific medications to achieve normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

When these levels are not controlled, they increase the risk for large blood vessel disease, which can cause heart attacks and strokes and lead to amputations. It is critical to control these conditions, as well as the diabetes.

Many of the lifestyle changes you may make to control your diabetes, such as diet and exercise, will also help control your blood pressure and cholesterol. Other changes may also be needed as well, such as lowering the salt and fats in your diet.

If you are diagnosed with diabetes, the first thing you will want to do is to find a physician, specifically an endocrinologist, to help you manage your condition. Find a doctor who will listen to you and answer your questions. Make a commitment to yourself to get educated and to make the lifestyle changes needed to maintain good health despite the challenges of diabetes. A great doctor, the right medication, a good diet, and exercise will go a long way in ensuring your well-being for many years to come.

Morning Inspiration: The Call of Abram (Genesis 12: 1-4)

The Call of Abram
1 The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you.

2 "I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.

3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."

4 So Abram left, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Haran.

The Singer's Tip: Vocal Hygiene

Vocal Hygiene For All Singers...the Do's & Don't By Bob Rose www.singeruniverse.com When it comes to maintaining our voice, so that it can operate at peak performance, a major stumbling block for many is poor vocal hygiene. You might ask, “What is vocal hygiene and what does it have to do with my voice? Why do I need it?” Anything from a cold to a diet or inadvertent vocal abuse could represent symptoms, or causes, of poor vocal hygiene. Because your voice is biological, it requires upkeep even more so than a manufactured instrument. A serious challenge in dealing with vocal hygiene is mucus. Whether we’re aware of it or not, our bodies are producing mucus from the time we awake right on through to the hours when our bodies sleep. Please take note, I am not advising a major change of lifestyle solely for the sake of the voice, but merely trying to bring to light certain issues to monitor and/or steps that can be taken in order to better maintain and develop the vocal instrument. So it is with a vocal program: we don’t do it because it’s the right thing to do (although it is) or to become more disciplined (although we do), but because the lack of such a program often leads one to consciously or subconsciously worry about what one may, or may not, be doing correctly as a singer – instead of just going about the business of singing. Respiratory mucus is mostly caused by diet, environment, and activity (which may include poor singing techniques, vocal fatigue, or over-singing). With all this being said, let’s get on with some of the causes, effects, and treatments that can aid you in developing and maintaining a more smoothly operating instrument with confidence. Hygiene Charts The voice is an instrument subject to physical, mental and emotional impact. All things that affect you and your body affect it. This is why it is important (and essential, in some cases) to follow a few simple health suggestions to ensure your instrument’s well-being. Use the following list only as a guideline. Consult with your doctor or throat specialist (E.N.T,/Laryngologist), if anything regarding your health or well-being is in question. The following are a few common sense suggestions and are not intended to replace any doctor’s advice or counsel. Vocal Do’s “Vocal do’s” are designed for vocal health maintenance and treatment. Followed with a degree of regularity these suggestions will help you sing better and feel better. · Get sufficient sleep. · Drink plenty of water (4-8 eight-ounce glasses per day; build up slowly). ·Drink herbal tea for opening up, warming, and soothing the throat and nasals, but follow with water, as tea may have a tendency to dry you out prior to singing. · Gargle morning and evening (more frequently, if needed) with a light, to-the-taste salt-water solution (a teaspoon in a cup of lukewarm water). You may also add a pinch of baking soda to the water, if you desire. Also, occasionally gargle with plain cold tap water (i.e., nothing added) to help cool down an irritated throat. ·Steam your lungs and vocal cords by taking deep breaths in the shower. · Steam whenever the nasals or throat are clogged up from sinus congestion; a cold, smog, smoke, or the like. Use a personal steamer or simply boil a pan of water, place it on a counter or table and inhale the vapor with a towel over your head, like a tent (making sure that you do not get too close to the pan, which could cause a serious burn), When mucus is loosened, gargle it out. · To open clogged nasals: use (a) a saline solution nasal spray and (b) an opening nose strip or (c) spread sides of nose apart with thumbs and index finger (by pushing outward on the sides) for a quick opening only. ·Suck on natural (chemical-free) throat lozenges (sugar-free, if possible) as needed, unless the throat is inflamed, then ·Suck on slippery elm throat lozenges for an irritated or sore throat or crush and add to tea. · Use an antacid when needed to avoid heartburn or acid reflux, which causes repetitive burning of throat tissues and vocal cords (check with your pharmacist or doctor). · Buy a saline solution spray (i.e., light, purified salt water) and spray the nasal passages and the throat daily as many times as needed to loosen mucus and soothe irritated tissue (there are no active chemicals in most saline solutions as there are in a decongestant spray). · Treat cold sores in your mouth with a liquid or a gel product specifically for cold sores. · Use petroleum jelly on the edge of your irritated nasals or on chapped lips, if needed. · Use a mucus thinner/decongestant cough suppressant when needed (consult with your doctor or pharmacist). Remember the last time you started or were in the middle of a note and it cracked or even disappeared completely? This is why it is so important to keep the air stream connected and the air passages uninterrupted. The air stream carries the vocal sound like a carrier band that delivers a cell phone’s signal to its destination. If the band is interrupted there are dropouts in the transmission of your conversation, just as there are cracking or dropouts in singing when the air stream hits mucus. This is one reason mucus is so important to eliminate. Another issue is that mucus blocks your resonant cavities, such as your nasal passages, and causes your voice to lose its fullness, resulting in a “thin” tone and the loss of pitch control. Your air-stream sees mucus as resistance because mucus is random and causes the air-stream to become fragmented and uneven as it passes through your instrument producing a broken stream. Remember whatever you do for or to your body, you do for or to your instrument. And whatever you do for or to your instrument you do for or to your body. Vocal Don’ts “Vocal don’ts” are designed to aid in your awareness of actions that can be taken to reduce, or eliminate, problems stemming from mucus. · Limit coffee intake. Use decaffeinated whenever possible (caffeine is a diuretic and dries you out). Try avoid coffee completely before or during a performance (counteract caffeine consumption by drinking a lot of water). · Don’t consume lemon or any citrus before performing as they contain acids, which irritate your throat. Also try cutting down as a general rule, for acids produce mucus. · Don’t consume vinegar, hard alcohol or spicy food when your throat is irritated or before performing. In general, it is also advisable to cut down on these as well. · Avoid milk chocolate, especially prior to performances or singing, as it produces mucus. · Avoid peanuts, popcorn, crackers or other dry foods before performing because they absorb water from your system, dry out your throat, and stick to your mouth, throat and articulators. · Avoid gargling with mouthwashes or medicated sprays, since they can dry or burn the throat and cause mucus. Check with a throat specialist (E.N.T.) and/or a pharmacist if you need medical guidance in finding the best medication for your health and voice. Mouthwash is fine when used in the mouth only, but do not gargle with it. · Don’t consume sugar or sweets before a performance, as they produce mucus. · Do not smoke or inhale smoke. First or second-hand smoke is an irritant and a health hazard, as confirmed by the Surgeon General, and causes mucus, as well as the possibility of an uncontrolled, raspy voice. · Don’t eat within two to four hours, depending on the size of the meal (the smaller the better), before performing, due to the interaction between the diaphragm and the digestive system (also, to avoid acid reflux, heartburn, or other stomach reactions). · Avoid decongestants, which dry you out. Use only those that thin, not harden mucus when necessary. A good mucus-thinner is appropriate. Check with your doctor or pharmacist. · Don’t neglect your medical care – failure to have regular examinations could allow a condition to continue without your awareness (consult with a qualified E.N.T.). My Morning Thought: Focus on the Right Now & Prepare for Tomorrow

Good Morning Folks, I woke up this morning, blessing GOD for continually being faithful, consistent, loyal, truthful, loving, caring, patient, and kind! My pledge today is to focus on the right now, bless GOD for where I am right now, thanking him that I am NOT where I was yesterday, and Praising him for the destiny ahead! The bible says for us not to worry about tomorrow for it has enough worries of its own, and we cannot worry about the past..because the past occurs every 60 seconds. We cannot undue what we did just 60 seconds ago..Now that is amazing! So that leaves us to the Right Now! Live it..... Q: What are 3 principles today? A: Bless Him, Thank Him, and Praise Him!!! You got it fam! Go possess ya land!!!!

I was engaged in a conversation today about the relevance of Christian Rap/Christian Hip Hop that provoked my thoughts The census of the conversation was what is Christian Rap/Christian Hip really and why in the church? and he went to outline in the conversation opposition to what Gospel/Christian Hip-Hop faces.... It is my belief that music is the gift..from the creator.. God speaks in a today generation voice..The voice of Mahalia was my grandmothers rap...The voice of my great aunties and uncles was the changing chord to a more contemporary three part harmony of the choir by Mattie Moss Clark..The rap of the generations gone by was that of Thomas A. Where Has The Music Gone????

Today....Thinking....Listening.......Mr. Radio you are on yet nothing is playing. I hear spurratic notes and chords are being pushed through the speakers in my car. I patiently await a song to come on with a theme or somewhat of a progression in imagery through lyric and nothing happens. I remember the 70's groups like Earth, Wind, and Fire, The Average White Band, The Doobie Brothers, The Emotions. The sang with lyrical content, passion, and emotion. The bands of the 80's such as Hall and Oates, Cindi Lauper, Madonna, Prince, and the incomparable Micheal Jackson were yet expressive but innovative in transitioning sound to a new generation and continuing to tell a story through music. The 90's generation carried the mantle to a new high the "Hip Hop Era" this era just as expressive as the decades before merging many different styles of music to carve a new niche. This leaves me to these questions, what is the progression of the music today? Is Lil Wayne and Drake the future of rap and hip hop? Will Britnae Spears or Katie Perry be the leaders of the pop culture? Does true R & B exist anymore? Exactly where has the music gone? I would love to hear your thoughts on this.......
